Future Media Lab.: Interview with Roberto Viola, Director General of DG Connect

On 26 January 2016, EMMA's think tank, the Future Media Lab., will be hosting its 6th annual conference, this year on the topic of technology and audience engagement. In the run-up to the event, the Future Media Lab. team conducted an interview with Roberto Viola, Director General of DG Connect in the European Commission and one of the panellists at the event.

During this interview, Viola discussed the Commission's Digital Single Market Strategy, specifically regarding the problem of geoblocking, the clarification of contract and consumer law, and the rules surrounding parcel delivery and VAT taxation. He also emphasised the reform of the Audiovisual Media Services     Directive.

Additionally, Viola shared insights regarding the collection of audience data, saying that "we need to take into account and balance two interests", those of companies (data as a commercial asset) and that of individuals (data as a personal right). He also talked about the importance of copyright, the need for media companies to invest in technology, and possible opportunities for research and innovation funding.
